Aircraft general knowledge

Using a carrier with a counterweight, the horizon beam is moved, which is held

in a horizontal position when the gyro rotates at 12-15,000 revolutions per

                minute.

Due to the gimbal suspension, not only rolls can be read.

The instrument also functions as a tilt indicator.

The aircraft silhouette is above the horizon bar during climb and below during
                descent.

Here you can see the instrument

                and its principle sketch.

When banking more than 100 degrees and at inclinations of more than 60 – 70

degrees, there is a risk that the gyro will “overturn”. It will take up to 10 minutes

during straight flight before the instrument functions normally again.

The gyro instrument is affected by precision and has minor error indications
during sharp turns and accelerations. However, the errors are small, and if

vacuum is otherwise available, it is a very safe and indispensable aid.

                8.12.8.4 Direction indicator (Directional gyro)

Due to turbulence and errors during turns, accelerations, climbing, etc., the

magnetic compass (see next section) cannot be used for navigation.
