4.6.2 The phonetic alphabet

Now, you might be wondering - what is all this wheel-of-

fortune talk with those letters?

It’s called "the phonetic alphabet." You need to learn the

phonetic alphabet by heart. Below is the Phonetic

Alphabet.

You must learn the phonetic alphabet by heart. Practice makes perfect -

practice, for example, when you are driving a car by entertaining your fellow

passengers by saying: "We have a SIERRA KILO OSKAR DELTA ALFA" (a Skoda).

As you may have noticed on the previous page, we made a call to Herning

Radio, introducing ourselves as OY-CTZ (OSKAR YANKEE CHARLIE TANGO

ZULU).

When Herning Radio answered back, he called us O-TZ (OSKAR TANGO ZULU),

He did this because it is allowed to answer the call with an abbreviation.
