Communication
4.10.1.2 ATIS
Back to our flight from Roskilde (EKRK) to Stauning (EKVJ).
The first thing we do is listen to ATIS. Here, we receive information about the
runway in use, wind, temperature, etc. We also got the QNH. We will
immediately set this on the altimeter.
After the initial call, we must acknowledge the received ATIS and QNH.
At larger airports we also get information about runway conditions.
At larger airports you can listen to ATIS (Automatic Terminal Information
Service) on a specified frequency.
It is in English, and the order of the information contained is always the same.
1. Name of the aerodrome (e.g. "Copenhagen Kastrup").
2. Letter designation of the information (Information Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.)
3. Indication of whether it is for arriving and/or departing aircraft
4. Time of issue/observation (in UTC)
5. Expected approach procedure (Instrument Approach)
6. Runway(s) in use (Runway and/or take-off runway)
7. Status of arresting systems (Arresting system, if it constitutes a hazard)
8. Runway surface condition (Runway Condition Code (RCC) - e.g. SNOWTAM)
9. Any holding delay
10. Transition level (if applicable)
11. Surface wind (direction and speed, incl. gusts)
12. Visibility (and RVR if applicable)
13. Current weather (rain, fog, thunder, etc.)
14. Clouds (cloud amount below 5,000 feet)
15. Air temperature and dew point
16. Altimeter setting (QNH)
17. Other important information (Significant weather phenomena, NOTAMs)
18. Final instruction (e.g. "Confirm receipt of information [letter] upon first
contact")
