DIFFERENT
TYPES OF LEAVE
ENTITLEMENT
(BRIEFLY EXPLAINED)
here are many types of leave, such as annual leave,
sick leave, maternity leave, paternity leave and
Tfamily responsibility leave. Although organisations
differ in operations and terms of employment, employees
working for more than 24 hours a month qualify for the
following types of leave in South Africa.
ANNUAL LEAVE
An employee can take up to 21 continuous days’
annual leave or, by agreement, 1 day for every
17 days worked or 1 hour for every 17 hours worked.
For employees working a 5-day week,
this translates to 15 working days of leave
For employees working a 6-days weekly,
this translates to 18 working days of leave.
Leave must be taken by no later than 6 months
after the end of the annual leave cycle.
An employee can only get paid out for any
unused leave days upon termination of
employment.
SICK LEAVE
An employee may take up to 36 days paid sick
leave during a 36-month cycle. This is applicable
to 6-day workers, alternatively,
An employee may take up to 30 days paid sick
leave during a 36-month cycle. This is applicable
to 5-day workers.
During the first 6 months of starting at a company,
the employee will be entitled to 1 day’s paid sick
leave for every 26 days worked.
An employer may require a medical certificate
before paying for more than 2 sick days at a time
20 or more than twice in 8 weeks.
