Emory/GA Tech/Peking Diploma
Policy Description
Peking University joined the Biomedical Engineering Program with Georgia Tech and Emory
University in April 2010. The first student expected to graduate from the program is spring
2013. Peking University has requested that the diploma ordered for this student meet the
requirements for the Ministry of Education of China; and as such they’ve requested that the
wording and format be changed to meet their requirements (see sample of Peking diploma).
In addition, Peking has requested that the date the student completed their requirements
from Peking University (January 7, 2013) be noted on the diploma. Th2176234e MOU
signed by President Wagner April 23, 2010 states, “GT and/or Emory control the program as
it relates to the issuance of a degree from GT/Emory, PKU controls the program as it relates
to the issuance of a degree from PKU”.
Emory students who’ve met all degree requirements for their program are awarded degrees
during one of the three degree conferral dates within an academic year (one for each term).
In this case, to award the degree, all three dissertation committees for the program must
agree that the student met the requirements as of January 7, 2013. (the dissertation
submissions deadline for Laney Graduate School is April 12, 2013--Georgia Tech and Peking
University have already signed off on the student’s dissertation).
Costs
In addition to date issues, the estimated cost for ordering diplomas both in English and
Chinese is $648.80 per diploma. Currently, only Emory University orders and pays for
diplomas for the Biomedical/Engineering program which currently has 24 students enrolled.
Applicability
This policy applies to all Emory University units requesting a joint diploma between Emory
University, Georgia Tech and Peking University
Policy Details
We propose that It’s more cost effective for PKU to produce the diplomas for the students
who graduate from this program with both conferral dates displayed on the diploma
(January 1, 2013 – May 13, 2013). Peking University has agreed to produce the diploma and
is willing to add the Emory date of graduation to the diploma (see attached). It is clear that
in China, a diploma is an important document for verification and other purposes, that the
