A Table Prepared For You
by Preach Elder Brown
We all love to eat, and sometimes can't get enough of
it. Most celebrated holidays start and end with food. I
remember as a child going over to my grandmas home
and before entering her door, you were slapped in the
face with the smell of freshly baked sweet potato pies.
This aroma floated throughout the hallway, arresting all
who were in distance of a slice. Along with the pie smell,
you could also tell that some other recognizable food
aromas were present, turkey & dressing, oven baked
macaroni & cheese, greens and ham hocks... Oh boy'
let me stop there. Let me just say, so much food was
prepared, that everybody was nearly threatened by
grandma (we call her big Momma). She would tell every-
body to take food home, and everybody including the kids, yes... me at the time, I
would slop my plate with my favorite of course. But no one left empty handed, and
big Momma watched and pointed saying, "get some of this, and get some of that,
and you need a little of this." We all complied with heavy dripping plates & food
stuffed bags.
The spirit of big Momma with the table spread makes me think of how God says
he'll prepare a table for us. Sometimes we get so excited to say the next part of the
verse that the table will be "prepared in the presence of our enemies" yet missing
the whole concept of the prepared table.
The word (prepare) means make ready beforehand for a specific purpose, the feast,
the table, the spread. God knows what we need, when we need it, and the purpose
of when it should be given.
The word (table) is a set point or period in ones life that may be full or empty
depending on experience, failure or triumph. Though God won't leave your table
empty, and your cup without overflow, he promises that it will be prepared.
Whatever you're hungry and thirst after, it's already prepared. Like big Momma
would say, "wash your hands, and eat." God wants us to just relax and enjoy the
spread, and our enemies gets a chance to experience and see how good God truly is
to us. You don't have to call your haters and say "look at me, or look what I got,"
they see how good God is to you, and you don't even have to shove it down their
throat that you're blessed.
Today God has prepared a table for you, double blessings, outstretched hand of
mercies, a spread of love and kindness, sealed with the greatest gift of all... Love!!!
Psalms 23:5 ~ "Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine
enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over."
