Green Hydrogen
Hydrogen Production Pathways
The majority of hydrogen is produced from fossil fuels by steam reforming of natural gas and other light hydrocarbons, partial oxidation of heavier hydrocarbons, and coal gasification. Other methods of hydrogen production include biomass gasification, zero CO2 emission methane pyrolysis, and electrolysis of water.
Classification Of Hydrogen (based on production pathway)
Grey Hydrogen
Hydrogen is labelled as Grey Hydrogen when it is produced using fossil fuel(natural gas and coal) as feedstock
Blue Hydrogen
Hydrogen is labelled as Blue Hydrogen when it is produced using fossil fuel as feedstock, but with mechanisms in place to capture carbon dioxide, store it and send to other processes for use via carbon capture, storage and utilization(CCSU) technology
Green Hydrogen
Hydrogen is labelled as Green Hydrogen when it is produced from renewable, emission free energy sources. The process involves electrolysis of water powered by renewable energy such as wind, solar, or hydroelectric energy
