Urban Indians’ Integrated Approach to Healthcare
On one hand, many of the ISMs consider the physical and spiritual human body as part of its
practice. In certain cases, the functioning of the body is examined in relation to the entire
universe. On the other hand, the prescribed scientific community looks at healthcare as a
combination of biological parts that can be ‘fixed’ or ‘replaced’ by breaking it down to its most
fundamental ingredients. Today, the average Indian consumer of healthcare finds themselves
torn between these radically different ‘religions of healthcare’. ISM is perceived by the urban
Indian user to be the second option after allopathy, and this means that the unique benefits of
treatment using these practices are often overlooked. Unclear effects of an integrated use of
the different methods of healthcare means that there is little opportunity to have conclusive
documentation and proof of the effectiveness of ISM on its own or when used in combination
with allopathy.
