Trickling Filters
As with activated sludge, a Trickling Filter is a living community of active biology, requiring
oxygen (or carbon dioxide), food, time, temperature and near neutral pH to survive.
The Operator must protect and optimize. One way to maximize the wastewater interface to
the media is to recirculate.
Recirculating wastewater allows more time for the wastewater pollutants to be removed. It
is not uncommon to recirculate as much as 150% of the incoming wastewater within
larger trickling filters.
