Trickling Filters
Trickling Filter Problems:
Ponding
Trickling Filters can become backed up due to an excess of zoogloeal mass. This condition
is called Ponding.
Ponding can result in short circuiting and reduced contact time through the impacted filter.
Ponding can be corrected by utilizing a weak solution of chlorine or sodium hypochlorite.
This weak solution can remove the excess zoogloeal mass to allow even percolation
through the Trickling Filter. The excess humus that sloughs off can be collected and
removed from the underdrain system.
Operations need to carefully walk onto the media to pick up debris and to flush areas of
ponding with a hose.
Humus (excess zoogloeal mass) will slough off seasonally as temperatures change in the
spring and fall. Operations must be diligent in keeping the underdrains inspected and
clean.
