Trickling Filters
Trickling Filter Problems:
Snails
Snails can breed within the Trickling Filter and underdrain systems. Snails can be a big
problem for any fixed media system, as they will feed on the biological growth on the
media thus impacting the treatment efficiency.
Chlorination will help control snails but will only kill the adult snails.
Snail eggs are surrounded in a gelatinous egg sack that will prevent chlorine from killing
the snail eggs. A much better solution to the snail issue is the use of a cationic polymer.
Polymer will smother the adult snails and will incase the gelatinous egg sack. When the
snail eggs hatch they will immediately be smothered by the polymer.
