Trickling Filters
Trickling Filter Media
Rock media was the first type of media used. It provided surface area and lasted a
long time. However, rock is heavy and limits how high the rock media can be stacked.
Limited stack height results in limited hydraulic retention time and limited treatment.
Rocks offer only a small surface area for zoogloeal mass to grow on. As a result, rock
media is not the most efficient type of Tricking Filter media.
Plastic media is far more efficient. It is lighter, can be stacked higher (providing
longer hydraulic retention). Plastic media offers far more surface area per square foot
for the zoogloeal mass to grow on, through its honeycomb structure.
