               LEARNING OBJECTIVES

After reading this chapter, you should be able to:

                 • Explain how some inflammatory diseases may result from immune attack on
many different organs at the same time.
                 • Describe the probable pathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

                 • Explain how many different forms of arthritis are immunologically mediated.
                 • Describe the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis.
                 • Define rheumatoid factor (RF) and antinuclear antibodies.

                 • List the diagnostic criteria for systemic lupus erythematosus.
                 • List the diagnostic criteria for rheumatoid arthritis.
                 • Describe the classification of the immune-mediated arthritides.

                 • List the appropriate treatments for systemic lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.

Animals suffer from inflammatory diseases involving multiple
organ systems. In human medicine, these have been called
“rheumatic” diseases, “connective tissue” diseases, or “collagen”

diseases based on outdated views on their pathogenesis. These
diseases or syndromes are interrelated and have many overlapping
clinical features (Fig. 38.1). One common feature is extensive and
uncontrolled inflammation, and it may be useful to consider them
to be caused by innate autoimmunity or “autoinflammatory

diseases.” Because of their similarities, it is sometimes difficult to
