MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR, WESLEY METHODIST CHURCH KL
“So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.”
Matthew 7:12
We live in a multi-racial society and we are blessed with the diversity and richness of each culture that makes up our Malaysian society. At the same time, we have various challenges as a multi-racial and a multi- religious society. In our schools, what can we cultivate in the lives of our young ones as we seek to promote a progressive and harmonious society that will continue to grow and prosper and bless each other in spite of our differences?
Jesus made a very profound statement in Mathew 7:12 when He said that we must “do to others what you would have them do to you...”
I gather that there are basically three ways in which human beings relate to one another in the world today:
1. Takeadvantageofothersforourownpersonal gain, survival, progress or success.
2. Do not do (bad things) to others what you do not want them to do to you (being passive or abstaining oneself from doing evil).
3. Do (good things) to others what you would have them do to you (actively pursuing and doing good things to or for others).
I believe many of us do not subscribe to No. 1 while others may teach No. 2 but Jesus encourages us to practice No. 3. This is not easy because it springs from a self-sacrificial and selfless love for others. It is like “Paying It Forward” as it may or may not come back to us; still we do it in good faith for the love of others. This kind of love is divine (the word is “agape”,as used in the New Testament of the Bible).
Therefore, in our schools we must teach our young ones not only that we must not exploit or take advantage of others for our own selfish gain (No.1), or merely abstaining from doing bad things that might hurt others (No. 2), but also to proactively seek to do the good that enhances the lives of others. If we all follow this truth then society will definitely take on a different shape. Progress and growth will happen to all as we seek the wellbeing and welfare of each other.
In education, we are all reminded that we must take on this responsibility of teaching and grooming our young ones to internalize this truth in the midst of acquiring skills and head knowledge. Head knowledge and skills are easy to impart but right values and right living are difficult to cultivate. I pray that our schools will continue to mould young lives to have the capacity to live beyond themselves and learn to truly serve the good of others. This then, is true success, and I believe it is the foundation for a progressive and successful nation.
I wish to congratulate all students who have done well in their studies and all our teachers who have taught our young ones well. May God continue to bless our school and may each life that has passed through our school make an impact in our society for greater peace, harmony and success for all.
