TTIA WORK ON HUMAN RIGHTS

“Human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our
nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic origin, colour, religion,
language, or any other status. We are all equally entitled to our human rights
without discrimination. Universal human rights are often expressed and guar-
anteed by law. International human rights law lays down obligations of Gov-
                                                             ernments to act in
                                                             certain ways or to

                                                             acts, in order to

Thai Tuna Industry Association (TTIA) has been promoting good labour
practices within its members’ workplaces that meet universal human rights
standards. This not only creates good working relationship between employers
and workers, but also shows that workplaces do not discriminate against any
workers on the base of nationality, religion and other factors to ensure the
equal rights of Thai and migrant workers.
Employees are encouraged to discuss, negotiate, and provide recommen-
dations to employers to improve work conditions and welfares, while employ-
ers take these inputs into consideration for further action. TTIA promotes
“Social Dialogue” between employers and employees through the following
        approaches:
              1. Encourage all members to utilize “the Employees’ Welfare Commit-
tee”- as stipulated in the Labour Protection Act – to include migrant workers
in this mechanism, as well as receive complaints and recommendations from
them through meetings and comment boxes. This will provide another channel
for employees to communicate directly with employers.
2.Conduct Social Dialogue Workshop to strengthen relationship between
employers and employees by creating mutual understanding on how to work
together. Issues focused are rights and benefits of employees, as well as func-
tioning of welfare committees. TTIA, in collaboration with Migrant Workers Rights
Network (MWRN), previously conducted a Workshop on Happy Work Place (2014),
a Workshop on Migrant Workers and Employers (2015), a Workshop on Roles
and Responsibility of Employees’ Welfare Committee (2016). and a workshop
on promoting WelFare Committee to be accepted by migrant workers (2018).
