featuring enough surface area to fit 60,000 people under one roof, remains an inspirational
setting for pilgrims and visitors alike. If you are looking for a test, there are 320 steps from the
base of the dome at St. Peter’s up to the cupola. The great view of the city framed by St. Peter’s
Square is most certainly worth the journey.

Your private tour will conclude at approximately 11:00 a.m. The kids might insist on climbing
to the top of St. Peter’s (the view is worth the effort). Near the Vatican, you might take time on
your own to visit Castel Sant’Angelo, originally constructed as a mausoleum for Emperor
Hadrian and his family and later converted into a mighty fortress.

In the late afternoon, we’ve arranged for a private gelato making lesson for the family. In our
experience, culinary lessons come in many different shapes and sizes. Some are institutional in
an impersonal setting. It’s probably not a surprise that we favor more intimate experiences
including a relaxed, home-like setting, great
conversation about food, culture and Rome itself with
time to roll up your sleeves and experiment with
proper guidance. In Rome, Paola offers exactly this
               experience. We’ve included a 2–hr gelato making
lesson for the family. You’ll meet Paola at 4:30 p.m.
                        th
at her 16 century culinary studio overlooking Piazza
di Santa Maria in Trastevere. Here, you will prepare
and enjoy your very own gelato. You will learn how
to make Italian ice cream using recipes that you can
reproduce at home. Learn the secrets to the perfect Italian parfait of chocolate, coffee, hazelnut
and more, without the need of an ice cream maker or any fancy equipment. This is a real hands-
on session and previous experience in the kitchen is not required (Paola is well versed in working
with families). It all ends with a delicious treat and a sense of accomplishment, knowing that
this experience was time well spent.

Afterward, stroll across the piazza for a visit on your own to the Church of Santa Maria in
Trastevere, one of the oldest churches in Rome. The ancient mosaics are stunning.
