After lunch, your guide will lead you on a panoramic tour of the city and will otherwise
customize touring prior to your return by train to Rome. Visit top Naples landmarks including
Plebiscite Square, home to the Royal Place, the beautiful neoclassic church of San Francesco di
Paola, and Town Hall Square,
featuring the medieval Castel
Nuovo begun by the French
Anjou family in 1279.
Perhaps you will enjoy a
break at Gran Caffe
Gambrinus, a caffe from 1860
referred to as “the drawing
room of Naples.” You might
elect to visit the residential
quarter of Posillipo, located
on the water's edge and famous for historic buildings and landmarks as well as the excellent view
of the city of Naples. Stroll the atmospheric oldest district of Naples after the Greek settlement
of Partenope, Centro Storico. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995, Centro Storico (the
historical quarter or old city) is the original Neapolis founded by the Greeks in the 5th century
B.C., with some 25 centuries of history layered on top.
You might visit the fascinating underground featuring Greco-Roman remains. Hidden 130 feet
under the heart of the bustling city lies a 50-mile network of caves and tunnels. Originally built
as mines for the stone used to construct the buildings above, they have since been used as cult
sites, catacombs, secret meeting places and even shelter during World War II. Explore this
system of 2700-year-old Greek tanks connected by 2000-year-old Roman aqueduct channels
(admission cost not included in your program). There is a notable archaeological museum in
Naples featuring artifacts from Pompeii, nearby Herculaneum and Rome, but the kids might be
more interested in the Naples Underground.
Late afternoon, your driver will leave you off at Napoli Centrale railway station for the train 70
min back to Rome. Admissions are not included today.
