Day 8: A Day on the Coast in Ancient Cadiz and El Puerto de Santa Maria. Meet Ivan at
your accommodations this morning for a full day of touring. First, you’ll travel 1 hr to the old
town of Cadiz for a historic walking tour focusing on the period when the city was founded by
th
the Phoenicians in 9 -century BC.
Located on a narrow peninsula
surrounded by the sea, the old city
looks quite Moorish in appearance
and is intriguing, with narrow
cobbled streets opening onto small
squares. The golden cupola of the
cathedral looms high above long
white houses. Cadiz was a thriving
Roman port and a launching point
for expeditions to the New World.
In fact, the city held a monopoly on
trade with the Americas during the 1700s and visit two of the grand buildings that best represent
the wealth accumulated by the city during that time.
After your history lesson, it’s time to switch gears and learn about the rich culinary scene. Ivan
will lead you on a food tour of Cadiz, including a visit to the local market with stops in selected
stalls for tastings of the local offerings. A light tapas lunch is included today. Next, Ivan will
lead you on the ferry from Cadiz to El Puerto de Santa Maria, located just across the bay of
Cadiz. You’ll explore this
charming old town either by way
of a brief walking tour or a
panoramic driving tour. Along
with Jerez and Sanlúcar de
Barrameda, El Puerto de Santa
Maria forms a corner of the famed
Sherry Triangle and is a key
sherry production center. A bit
rough around the edges, the old
town center is refreshingly traffic
free, with cobbled streets lined
with orange trees and typical
Andaluz architecture featuring
lots of wrought iron and intricate tile work. End the day back at your accommodations and enjoy
the evening at leisure. Dinner off property tonight perhaps in Arcos (cost of dinner taxis not
included).
