En route back to Vault de Lugny with Brendan, visit Vezelay for a visit to the impressive
basilica, one of the most historically significant
sites in all of Burgundy. Also one of the most
outstanding examples of architecture from the
Romanesque period, the current Benedictine
abbey church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine at
Vézelay was built in the twelfth century and is
dedicated, as the name suggests, to Mary

town and the basilica World Heritage Sites.
Legend suggests that relics of Mary Magdalene
were brought to this site at the end of the first
millennium, when the initial abbey was built. Consequently, Vezelay became a major pilgrimage
site and was one of the starting points of the Way of St. James, a pilgrimage route extending to
the Spanish border and across the Iberian Peninsula to the coast at Santiago de Compostela. Its
popularity among pilgrims brought great wealth to the town, and that wealth remains evident
today.
Brendan will leave you off at your accommodations and the balance of the day is at leisure.
