Day 7: The Battle of Britain Air Show at Duxford. This morning take a short taxi ride to London
Kings Cross Station ahead of the 1-to 1-hr 30 min journey to Cambridge by train. On arrival in
Cambridge, there will be a Duxford courtesy bus for the 30-min ride to the airfield. The Duxford
airfield played an important role in the famous
Battle of Britain during World War II. The pivotal
battle ended when Germany’s Luftwaffe failed to
gain air superiority over the Royal Air Force despite
months of targeting Britain’s air bases, military
posts and, ultimately, its civilian population.
Britain’s decisive victory saved the country from a
ground invasion and possible occupation by
German forces while proving that air power alone
could not be used to win a major battle.

Squadrons of pilots and their aircraft stationed at Duxford took to the skies day after day to intercept
and turn back the German Luftwaffe. Duxford’s history dates back to the late stages of World War
               I. Today the complex is affiliated with the Imperial War Museums. During your visit late morning,
you’ll see restored aircraft from various times in history, and the operations room from which
Duxford’s land crew directed pilots during the Battle of Britain. (Please note that a private tour of
the museum on this date is not possible.)

The Battle of Britain Air Show begins at approximately 1:30 p.m. and is the main air show of the
year, with the largest variety of displays and some spectacular formations. The full flying list will be
announced in stages, but we do already know that there will be a massed formation of Spitfires,
recreating what will have been a familiar sight in 1940 when Duxford was an important Second
World War fighter station. We’ve included Gold Premium Passes, which provide preferred seating
and some special access to the flightline walk for an up-close look at the air show aircraft. A casual
               lunch is included.
At the end of the day (the air show will end around 5 p.m.), make your way back to Cambridge
Railway station on the courtesy bus for your return to London by first-class train service.
