"Ultra" intelligence produced at Bletchley shortened the war by two to four years, and that without it
the outcome of the war would have been uncertain. Few outside of those who worked at Bletchley
knew its mission and few even inside the operation understood its breadth or importance. At the
peak of wartime operations, nearly 10,000 people worked here, and about 12,000 were stationed here
at some point in the conflict. During today’s visit as part of a group tour (private tours are not
possible), you’ll see code breaking huts where German messages were decrypted, translated and
analyzed. Other buildings contain exhibits showcasing the Banbury sheets used to help discover the
daily-changing codes and a time capsule that analysts left inside a door on the grounds.
Martin will be happy to tailor the day according to your preferences, so let us know if the ladies
would like some alternative suggestions in place of Bletchley Park. After lunch, consider a stop at
Waddesdon Manor. The Manor was built from 1874-1889 by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild to
display his outstanding collection of
art treasures and to entertain! The 45
rooms currently on view combine the
highest quality French furniture and
decorative arts from the 18th century,
with magnificent English portraits and
Dutch Old Masters. The Bachelors'
Wing, exclusively used by Baron
Ferdinand's male friends (when
visiting without their wives) is
noticeably different in style to the rest
of the house. The wine cellars are
modeled on the private cellars at Château Lafite-Rothschild in Bordeaux, which contain thousands of
bottles of Rothschild wines dating to 1868. Waddesdon also features one of the finest Victorian
gardens in Britain, including seasonal displays and lovely shaded walks and views.
