Daniel T. Newcomb, was a remarkable man, with little or no personal pre-
tensions. Upright, unquestionable and correct in all his dealings. It was said
that no man could charge him with injustice or oppression in any business
transactions. The sternness of his character was fully equaled by his good-
         ness, temperance, and integrity.

To her credit Mrs. Newcomb’s devotion to her husband and his memory
were shown in her work by which the happiness and wellbeing of others
was foremost. She erected the Newcomb Memorial Chapel in Davenport in
her husband’s memory. She gave land from their homestead to the Daven-
port Academy of Sciences which later became the Putnam Museum. Mrs.
Newcomb also gave lands to the Davenport Presbyterian Church as well as
several educational institutions and was a chief patron of the public library.
She knew the importance of all types of education would help move a peo-
ple and community forward into the future.
