The early period of the case, 1947 to 1986, is really a
backcloth against which the rest of the period is examined
and evaluated. The early years of Stakis were dominated
by Sir Reo who had developed a hands-on style of
management. Stakis was a `family firm’ with a culture to
match it. The organisational structure at this time was a
relatively flat one changing over time to a divisional one as
Sir Reo approached the period when he wished to step
down.
This divisional structure was, to a great extent, made up of
autonomous strategic business units with little strategic
guidance. It could be argued that the style of management
at this time in Stakis was one of Financial control. But
