bankrupt had they called in their loans.

However, beneath it all Stakis was still a good company. It
was at this point that the value of Sir Lewis can be clearly

seen. Adair’s model (See Figure 6) succinctly highlights the

function Sir Lewis would undertake as the leader of the

Stakis revival.

Approached by the banks he was persuaded to take on the

role of company doctor. A role he would only assent to if

he was given absolute power. This was given and he
stopped the rot and set the company on the path to

recovery. The drive for image, quality and style was

replaced with a simple cost focus and a team was built that

had the respect and confidence of the stakeholders.
