Trip to the Mercedes Research and Development
Centre
The learners of German as second language in classes 7 to 9 went out for a field trip on the
20th of January. Early in the morning the group of 15 students with their two
teachers started on their way to explore the Mercedes Research and Development Centre in
Whitefield here in Bangalore. What they did not expect was, that they were starting a
little adventure to another continent: From Frau Frederike, the German teacher working in
Mercedes to the staff employed there, everybody spoke German. In the beginning our
students were shy and did not trust their own language skills, they wished to speak English
or they remained silent. But after a while, they slowly started using their language skills by
speaking in German or at least showing that they understood by translating the German they
heard into English to make sure they properly understood - and they did.
The highlight of the offered programme was a
presentation about the products, Mercedes is offering and
information about the fields of work here in Bangalore.
In a short visit to the little motor museum the students
learned how a car is manufactured and saw the model of a
working motor. Later, the group was invited to lunch , in
the canteen, a vast place serving 5000 meals a day. They
had the most exciting time when Mr. Satish, Manager of
the IT department showed them a model of the first car in
the world which was built following the original Mercedes
patent from 1896. Every student enjoyed around on the
old timer while Mr. Satish Sir shared his experience not
only as Head of IT but also as proud owner and chauffeur
of the world’s first car.
