Interpersonal Effectiveness GIVE
GIVE (G)—skills to make, keep, & improve relationships and friendships.
What to consider?
 The Golden Rule: Treat others how you want to be treated.
 How I want the other person to feel after this conversation
be Genuine—be real & authentic; not fake Honest Open
act Interested—show that you are engaged & care
 Show interest with verbals & non-verbals Eye contact Ask questions
Face the person Don’t interrupt
 Stick to your values
Put your phone down/away
                     Validate—acknowledge & communicate understanding of another person’s feelings, opinions, behavior, or the situation.
Validation is NOT:
 Agreeing with
 Liking what’s being shared
 Fixing or problem solving
 Cheerleading or offering encouragement
Validation helps:
 Me connect with others
 Others feel important
 Reduce tension & conflict
It sounds like... That seems... I hear you saying...
Easy manner—be gentle, relaxed, & easy-going/light hearted
           Make a joke Point out strengths or positives
Smile Use kind, respectful language Use appropriate volume &
tone
