Phoneme Identification & Segmentation

A phoneme is a unit of sound in speech.

A phoneme doesn't have any inherent

meaning by itself, but when you

put phonemes together, they can make
words. Think of when adults try to get a baby

to say his or her first word. ... The 'm' sound,

often written as /m/, is an example of

a phoneme.

Phonemes are units of speech sounds.

Vowels and consonants are phonemes. ...

Speech is normally produced by "shaping"
air as we breathe out. This "shaping" can

be produced by using the lips, tongue,

teeth, soft palate, and/or larynx.

There are about 44 Phonemes in English.

Despite there being just 26 letters in the

English language there are

approximately 44 unique sounds, also

known as phonemes. The44 sounds help
