combinations known as graphemes are used
to represent the sounds.
How many phonemes are in a word?
Rich has 3 phonemes, even though it has 4
letters. The combination ch stands for the
mouth move /ch/ at the beginning of chop.
But pitch also has 3 phonemes; you can tell
because it rhymes with rich.
When children read a new word, they need
to sound out the phonemes like this /r/ /a/ /t/
for the word rat.
As for the difference between phonemes
and letters: phonemes are the actual
sounds we form when speaking,
whereas letters are the signs used to depict
those sounds in writing
