Smoking was popular in those days, and its
nefarious effects were not yet known. He
died when I was 13, from the complications
of a cold and pneumonia.
It was not until I was in my fifties that I
realized the immeasurable influence he had
on my life, and the deep wound his death
had caused.
I was 10 years old when I attended a
conference given by two missionary doctors,
who showed us a film of their work in Africa.
It touched my heart, and I decided to
become a doctor, to alleviate suffering in the
world.
