During my teenage years, many migrants

came from Italy and Spain. Their children did

not speak French fluently, so school was a
big challenge for them. I started to teach

them math and science. I loved to see their

eyes light up when they “got it.”

The brain and the mind fascinated me. How
do we think? Why do we behave the way we

do?

I read books on lobotomies, a process
popular at that time. Could we just snip a

piece of the brain to help people out of
mental illness? I was 13 years old then, and

lobotomies did not prove to have the

success hoped for.
