I enjoyed making this little art quilt from
Caroline’s “Sunset Wetlands” digital workshop.
Generally stuck to the easy to follow step by step
instructions except for:
Finished quilt is bit smaller about 34cm square.
Flowers and lily pads were made from more
confetti scraps of fabric and threads stitched
between two pieces of water soluble.
Birds are black cockatoos made from black lace
scraps on gold organza
Flowers are appliquéd on and then restitched from
the back with Wonderfil Dazzle thread in the
bobbin just because I love anything with glitz.
I would recommend this class to a beginner
through to an experienced sewer. Each step is
clearly explained and you have the freedom to
experiment techniques and also fit this sewing into
your schedule without being restricted to class
times.
Thank you, Caroline, for this project gift in the first
Digital Cloth Emag.

So, I was in another of Caroline’s Sharkey’s
classes, and I usually give her 5-6 of my
photos and let her decide what I’ll be doing in her
class…. She picked this one.
There was a little hidden corner of the lake just
around the corner from the famous bridge in
Monet’s garden where I took this photo in 2015.
It wasn’t until I was in Caroline class at the
Sewing Connection early this year that I started
building this image out of fabric. I made all of
the background in typical ‘Caroline Style’ that
had all of the confetti work, then started building
the layers of undergrowth, bamboo and the tree
in the foreground. I very quickly realised that it
would be difficult to get the flat, smooth texture
of the boats and the tree in the foreground with
stitching alone…. That’s when Caroline handed
me the paint! Just like when I’m in one of Sophie
Standings classes, she loves to push my
boundaries, I had never painted on fabric before,
I loved it, and I found that it came quite natural-
ly to me. I didn’t get this piece finished in class,
but took it home and kept working on it, adding
paint to the bamboo, making the darks darker
and the lights lighter really made it look 3D. I
really enjoyed making this piece…..and so does
Caroline!
