8. You have renounced your United States citizenship;
9. You have been dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces.
There are some people who are not allowed to obtain a concealed carry permit. Some of the reasons you may be ineligible include:
1. The physical inability to handle a firearm safely.
2. A felony conviction, unless your firearm rights have been restored.
3. A misdemeanor conviction for domestic violence.
4. Having adjudication withheld or sentence suspended on a felony or misdemeanor crime of violence unless three years have elapsed since probation or other conditions set by the court have been fulfilled.
5. A conviction for a misdemeanor crime of violence in the last three years. 6. A conviction for violation of controlled substance laws or multiple arrests for such offenses.
7. A record of drug or alcohol abuse.
8. Two or more DUI convictions within the previous three years.
9. Being committed to a mental institution or adjudged incompetent or mentally defective.
10. Failing to provide proof of proficiency with a firearm.
11. Having been issued a domestic violence injunction or an injunction against repeat violence that is currently in force.
12. Renouncement of U.S. citizenship.
13. A dishonorable discharge from the armed forces.
14. Being a fugitive from justice.
A common question I receive is, “What if I was arrested for one of these crimes, but I wasn’t convicted?” Well, for most arrested, you are innocent until proven guilty, so if you weren’t convicted of the crime, it shouldn’t affect your application. However, there are certain arrests that do prevent you from applying for concealed weapons permit and possessing a firearm. These are called dangerous crimes.
