There are many firearm manufacturers who meet this rigorous standard. Glock, Sig Sauer, Springfield and some Smith & Wesson firearms, just to name a few. However, there are just as many crap firearms on the market. Be sure to watch online reviews and ask friends, family and gun store employees which firearms they trust and which ones they don’t.
How to Choose a Caliber
You’ve probably noticed by now that every person you meet has a different opinion on which caliber firearm you should choose. Some will say that you need a 45 ACP to put the bad guy down with one shot. But what good is a 45 ACP if the person with the gun does not feel safe with that caliber? When selecting the right caliber firearm, it’s important to remember that what works for one person may not be a good option for another. Recently I met a woman who was is in her mid-70s who purchased a Taurus Judge from a local gun store. The Taurus Judge is a revolver that fires a .410 shotgun shell. This is a great home defense firearm for a strong, healthy person, but it’s a terrible option for this woman.
I believe it is more important to choose a caliber that you feel safe shooting than it is to have a massive caliber that you’re scared of. If you're new to firearms, I would recommend a 9mm. 9 mm is large enough to stop an attacker but small enough that 90% of first-time shooters can handle this firearm safely. Before buying a gun, I recommend going to a local gun range to try a wide variety of different-caliber firearms. Most gun ranges today will allow you to rent firearms for a small fee. This is a great opportunity to figure out what you like before spending a ton of money.
