When this book was in the
planning stages, I was
thinking of the handful of recipes
I wanted to carry over from book
one to book two. Surely some of
the frostings, and most definitely
the Darn Good Chocolate Cake,
I thought. It’s a classic in
our family. While in col-
lege, a cousin of mine
used to call her Aunt
Louise a week or so before she
planned a visit home just to make
sure there would be a Darn Good
Chocolate Cake ready and waiting
on the kitchen counter. And from
the looks of the letters and e-mail
messages that have poured in, this
cake gets a warm reception no mat-
ter where you call home. So why in
the world would I bother to gild the
lily and suggest you frost this per-
fection of a chocolate cake? Well,
just in case you want to dress it up
for a dinner party or a birthday—
instead of sprinkling it with a
tablespoon of confectioners’
sugar, pour Martha Bow-
den’s terrific cooked icing
over the cake. Chocolate
on chocolate, and chocolate inside
chocolate. Serious stuff, indeed!
