BURIED TREASURE CAKES

All children love to find treasures—and adults never outgrow this. So, I thought
it would be fun to create a cupcake with a surprise treasure inside.
When I was developing this recipe, I tested it using different candies to see
which ones stayed intact when baked into the cupcakes. M&M’s and Skittles
were our favorites. The dark chocolate frosting, which looks almost black, is
made by adding Dutch-process cocoa powder. And if you pipe a white X in the
middle of each cupcake, that X will mark the spot under which the candy
treasure is buried.
Serve these to some budding pirates, and by all means come up with your own
treasures and your own way of decorating these fun cupcakes.
