P. 35
Professional Personnel Leave for Illness - GCC/GDC
The Board of Trustees has established provisions for employee absences for the welfare of the
employees and for the protection of the students.
Accrual of Sick Leave
9 months = 12 days
10 months = 14 days
11 months = 15 days
12 months – 16 days
* Total number of days includes personal leave days.
Employment less than the above will be accrued at the rate of 1 1/4 days per 20 days of employment.
Use of Sick Leave
All for personal illness.
Two days of sick leave may be used for death in the immediate family (spouse, brother, sister, child,
parent or other closer relative such as mother-in-law, father-in-law, son-in-law, daughter-in-law,
nephew, niece, grandchild or grandparents of spouse); however, up to five days may be used in
unusual circumstances if approved by the principal and/or superintendent.
Personnel may use three day of their sick leave for personal purposes. Personal leave days are
not cumulative from year to year. No personal leave will be granted on the opening or closing day
school or during in-service training. (Policy GCC/GDC)
In unusual cases, additional days of the unused base days or accumulated day could be allowed for
emergency leave if request by the administrator and approved by the principal and/or superintendent.
Unusual circumstances would include other illness in employee’s family, home burned, extreme
hardship, or unforeseen emergencies.
Absences that do not require a substitute will be counted against the employee’s sick leave.
The use of sick leave may be subject to verification. Specifically, the district reserves the right to
require that an employee submit a doctor’s statement verifying an illness along with his absences
report form when the employee has been on sick leave for more than three consecutive working days.
The principal or employee’s immediate supervisor has the discretion to request such a statement.
If an employee’s use of sick leave forms a pattern and abuse is suspected, the principal/supervisor
may also require a doctor’s statement.
Transfer of Sick Leave
An employee with earned leave may transfer that sick leave to any school district in the state.
