• Cardiac surgery volumes have decreased
by 2% in Ontario; SMH has seen a
decline of 22%

• SMH makes up 7% of the Ontario market
share

• As a proportion of inpatient volumes,
cardiac surgery makes 4% SMH activity

• This service includes primarily elective admissions at SMH. 64% of cases are elective while 36% are
urgent.

• Top volumes are derived from Central East followed by TC, and Central for SMH

• The majority of patients (68%) are discharged home without support services. SMH has 12% of patients
being discharged to a Continuing Care facility*; when patients are discharged to other institutions SMH
refers most frequently to Bridgepoint (16% of patients).

• Providence is referred 12% of patients.
