Methodology – Defining Service (Inpatient/Outpatient)
• These services may not align to how each hospital normally reports its
services internally
• For example,
– SMH has an acute surgical service (TACS – Trauma and Acute Care Surgery)
that is a combination of General Surgery and Trauma services
– SMH has a Level 2 nursery that is reported as the L2 service which is a
combination of Newborn and Paediatric services
• Differences still exist between hospitals in how services are attributed to
physicians and the patient types cared for by those physician types
• For example,
– COPD cases at SJHC were mainly coded as having a most responsible
physician belonging to the Respirology service while SMH cases primarily
had a most responsible physician belonging to the Internal Medicine service
