Methodology – Defining Service (Inpatient/Outpatient)
• Each hospital uses its own definition of service to define a patient group,
set of providers, and/or number of beds
• In order to define service in a comparable way across hospitals, a
combination of main patient service and main provider service from the
coded abstracts were used for analyses:
– Main patient service allowed for separation of gynecology from obstetrics and
newborns and the analysis of palliative care and trauma services
– All other services were defined by most responsible provider’s service
• Main provider service is the service attributed to the most
DAD NACRS responsible physician* as coded in the Health Records
Abstract. The association between a physician and a
service is created and maintained by the hospital.
Main
Main Patient Provider
Service • Main patient service is only available for DAD records and
Service
is determined primarily by most responsible diagnosis;
however the relationship between diagnosis and service
Main
Provider can be modified by the hospital as they see fit.
