When Univers is not readily available, certain typefaces may be substituted but should have similar characteristics to Univers. These substitutes must be sans serif and include light and light condensed styles if possible. Shown on this page are fonts that have similar qualities.
While the Univers type family is the recommended secondary type for corporate materials, it may not be readily available to some departments and divisions when producing in-house materials such as faxes and press releases. In these instances, and because the type style ’Arial’ seems to be available to more departments, it may be used to produce in-house productions. Arial narrow would replace Univers Light Condensed and Arial Regular would replace Univers Light. Because Arial is heavier looking than the Univers Light and Light Condensed, care must be taken to use type sizes that don’t overpower the logo
and logotype.
Under no circumstance should the logotype (Friz Quadrata) be substituted with another typeface. It should be noted that the Univers type family is still the primary type style for corporate and external communications.
