PROPER NAMES
Truth to Teach (Source)
Isaiah 43:1 ‘But now, this is what the Lord says,…”I have summoned you by name,
you are mine.”’
God calls us by our proper names and he knows us.
We call people and our pets by a proper name. Proper names of places and objects
also have a capital letter.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the last lesson.
2. Talk about all the boys just being called ‘boy’ and all the girls just being called ‘girl’.
Let the children see how this is confusing. Ask how we know who is who.
God knows all our proper names.
3. Let each child say their proper first names and family name. Stress that these
naming words need capital letters.
4. Show the children a map and note the capital letters for places where we live. Give
lots of examples.
5. Talk about things which have capital letters, eg chocolate bars, games, books.
6. Review capital letters. Remind the children that we need them to start a sentence but
sometimes, with proper names, we may find a capital letter in the middle of a
sentence.
7. Let the children complete the worksheet or gather lots of proper names from books,
etc.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should be able to distinguish between proper names and common names.
2. They should be confident in using capital letters appropriately.
