Y6 Autumn Term Part 2. CW Lesson 12
PREFIXES
Truth to Teach (Source)
Prefixes are letters added to the beginning of words.
Prefixes give clues as to the meaning of words.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Ask the children if they know the difference between a prefix and a suffix.
(Prefixes are letters added to the beginning of words; suffixes are letters
added to the end of words)
3. Let the children take a card, on which is written half of a word with a prefix
(see separate sheet). The children must find a person who has the other half
of their word. They could write a definition of the word.
4. Gather the children back to share, writing their prefixes on the board with the
meanings of them.
5. Let the children suggest other prefixes.
E.g. tele, micro, audi, hydro, anti, co, un, dis, re, pre
6. Talk about number prefixes.
E.g. mono = one; uni = one; bi = two; tri = three; quad = four; oct = eight; dec =
ten
Let the children work in pairs to find at least one word beginning with each of
the number prefixes.
7. Let the children try the worksheet or find more words beginning with selected
prefixes.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. The children should be more confident in recognising well-known prefixes
which give clues to the meanings of words.
