Y6 Autumn Term. Writing Words (WW)
SUGGESTIONS FOR WRITING LESSONS
Most teachers will wish to plan their own writing lessons. These are suggestions
which can be adapted, if required. Teaching in grammar lessons may be referred to
as and when it is appropriate. Extend the children’s vocabulary and write challenging
spellings on the board. Discuss the importance of legible handwriting and punctuation
though the emphasis is clearly on creative or factual writing. Some classes may take
a longer or shorter time on the writing tasks below so flexibility is required.
Term Objectives
1. To write an autobiography.
2. To review letter writing.
3. To create a page for a recipe book with lists, method and illustrations.
4. To plan and write a modern parable
5. To write poems about the Christmas story
LESSONS 1-7
To write an autobiography
1. Read Genesis 1:26-27, parts of Psalm 139 and Acts 17:26 to remind the
children of the uniqueness of each individual. Read excerpts from a variety of
autobiographies eg ‘Cider with Rosie’ by Laurie Lee and discuss how they are
written. Differentiate between a biography (written in the third person) and an
autobiography (written in the first person).
Talk about the form the children may have filled in during the previous year,
providing information about themselves. Discuss how the children have changed in
appearance, likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, faith, etc since being in the
previous class.
Discuss the value of reading autobiographies as inspiration for our own lives.
Explain that over the half term the children are going to write their own
autobiographies to create a booklet, or a display, with photographs. Sensitivity
will be required for children from broken homes or difficult circumstances. Some
children may type their stories, some may write them, but planning will be vital.
Filling in the parts of the form (see separate sheet) each week in school and for
homework will form an important part of the process. Discuss with the children
suitable chapter themes.
