Classification Group I—Institutional
Buildings or portions of buildings in which people are cared for and live in a
supervised environment are described as institutions and are classified under
Group I.
There are four subcategories of the institution group. These are:
I-1: Supervised residential environments that provide personal care for 16 or
more persons who reside on a 24-hour basis in a supervised facility and receive
custodial care. These people are capable of self-preservation.
This includes but is not limited to:
Residential board and custodial care facilities
Assisted living facilities
Halfway houses
Group homes
Congregate care facilities
Social rehabilitation facilities
Alcohol and drug centers
Convalescent facilities
I-2: Facilities that provide medical care on a 24-hour basis for more than 5 persons
who are incapable of self-preservation.
This includes but is not limited to:
Hospitals
Nursing homes
Psychiatric hospitals
Detoxification facilities
Foster care facilities
