The County Pairs Competition was
played out at the Christie Miller In-
door Bowls Centre. Entries were
increased on the previous season
and as always competition was
fierce.

and Geoff Lane from Crudwell. (Bromham) failed this year to qual-
ify for the Championship but took their place in the Plate. In the Plate Semis Terry and Jean
Shore (Trowbridge) beat Arthur and Wendy Young (Melksham) by 11 shots to 6; Enid Tasker
and Partner (Bromham) were beaten 12 to 3 by Peter and Pearl Curtis (Atworth). The Plate
Final was a very close affair with the Shores moving ahead at the last to win by 9 shots to 8.
The Championship was equally well contested with Pairs from Kington Langley, Crud-
well, Westbury Blue Circle, Atworth, Upavon and Seend fighting it out. Wiltshire first England
u21 squad member, Aidan Wickes with partner Graham Cox (Westbury Blue Circle) lost in
the Quarter Finals to the eventual champions. In the semi-finals Andy and Maureen Jelly
were beaten 8 shots to 3 by Geoff Lane (Crudwell) and Pete Sullivan (Marshfield) whilst
Maureen Collett and Beryl Greenfield (Kington Langley) beat Pam and Les Baldry (Crudwell)
by a nailbiting 5 to 4.
In the final, the Kington Langley Pair took an early lead but consistent play from their
opponents led to an 8 to 2 victory for the Lane/Sullivan pairing. The irony of the result was
that Geoff Lane was originally paired with wife Jenny but a persistent back problem meant
her withdrawal with Pete Sullivan coming in as a substitute.
