North Devon & North Cornwall Short Mat Federation held its1st Annual singles competition for
the John Crossman Trophy. Following qualifying rounds at eight different venues throughout the
area the winners of each met at Woolsery’s Woolsach for the final stages. Those present were
treated to an evening of high class bowling which featured last end victories in almost every
            match.
Qualifiers were: Elliott James, Graham James and Jay Shaw from Yarnscombe, Fred Gud-
gin and Stan Deveau from South Molton, Lorraine Axtell (Winkleigh) Nancy Johns (Hartland)
and Martin Sexton (Wick). The quarter final draw saw Elliott James playing successfully against
his father Graham and Lorraine Axtell defeating Stan Deveau with a brilliant final wood. Nancy
Johns beat Fred Gudgin and Martin Sexton beat Jay Shaw both by the narrowest of margins.
The semi-finals paired the two ladies against each other and Lorraine again left it until
the final end to secure a place in the final. Elliott defeated Martin after conceding an early lead.
One mat was then moved to the middle of the hall for the final. In the first end Elliott con-
verted his position of being two down to four up with a weighted wood but Lorraine rectified
            things moving slowly
            into a 5-4 lead. The
            two players re-
            mained locked to-
            gether until the final
            end when Elliott who
            was one shot up
            won the final meas-
            ure by a centimetre
            to win by two shots.
                  All qualifiers
            were presented with
            a memento of the
            occasion by Presi-
