A last end three also gave Beth Whittle, Rosemary Beattie, Sadie White & Pauline Beattie 7
an 8 - 5 victory over Yvonne Tolley, Pam Fayers, Isobel Wardley & Becci Cox in an oth-
erwise very tight game. Michelle Wright, Sophie Minish, Sadie Whittle & Rachel Cassells
also won for Armagh by 12 - 7. In a late finish a point was gained by Joan Woods, Lesley Fennel,
Debbie Phillips & Jeanette Gayler, who’s last bowls coring a two gave them a 10 - 9 victory. Ar-
             magh 10 points and
In the penultimate session of the day, Armagh started by winning two of the three pairs
games, Beth whittle & Pauline Beattie from 8 across won 17 - 10 whilst Noreen Gilkinson &
Catherine McMillen went into the last end at 11 across and scored a three for a 14 - 11 victory.
England’s success saw Jean Dennington & Gillian Weston romping home 15 - 6. An even better
result came in the triples with Yvonne Tolley, Pat Beardsley & Kim Bridge winning a storming
game 18 - 2, only conceding the 2 on the last end. Armagh took the other triple in a much tighter
game, with Linda Milligan, Elizabeth Lavery & Diane Agnew winning 8 - 5. England won both
fours, 14 -5 to Shirley Cox, Isobel Wardley, Rachel Pedley & Debbie Phillips, whilst Nora martin,
Pam Fayers, Brenda Jones & Celia Jeans won 11 - 8.
The final session was the team game of 6 rinks. This turned out to be a narrow win for Ar-
magh on shots. Both teams won 3 matches each but the 56 - 50 shots advantage gave Armagh
the 6 match points and a 9 - 3 win. Crucial in this was the 16 - 5 win by Michelle Wright, Ann
Patton, Diane Agnew & May Cassells, who from 6 - 5 scored 11 shots over the closing four
             ends, finishing with consecutive fours.
The other two Armagh wins were much closer, 14 - 9 from Margaret Dempster, Sadie
White, Sandra Whittle & Pauline Beattie, plus an 8 - 7 from Teri Miller, Hilary Agnew, Irene Doone
& Catherine McMillen, who snatched a three on the last end for their single shot win.
For England Linda Wynn, Jan Hedges, Kim Bridge & Brenda Jones won 11 - 7. Jean
Woods, Lesley Fennell, Debbi Phillips & Jeanette Gayler fought back from 4 - 7 with six shots
over four ends to win 10 - 7. Also winning in a tight game were Shirley Cox, Lorraine Axtell,
Pauline Freeman & Celia Jones. The final totals gave an overall 65 - 47 points victory to Armagh
and by 567 shots to 533. The main difference being down to the 6 rink “team” games, which Ar-
magh took by 29 points to 19. Photos courtesy of Armagh Council.

                                         THE RULE THAT NEVER WAS!
There is an important “rule” that is invoked very regularly, which has
never appeared in any rulebook. We know that when the jack is
partly in the ditch, but overhangs the live area, a live bowl may play
it. This is covered by Rule C (2) (b) of the 2010 rulebook.
When a toucher is partly in the ditch, but overhangs the live
area it is assumed, quite logically, that this too may be played by
a live bowl. However this situation is not addressed in the rule-
book, and never has been. I am not suggesting that there is any-
thing wrong with this convention, but it really should be added to the rules.

              IGNORANCE, IGNORANCE, IGNORANCE
Brought in from the flat green game I have heard the phrase “leads
should put up and shut up”, over many years. To me this is the most
ignorant and arrogant statement I have heard for a very long time.
This assumes that leads know nothing and should remain as dum-
              mies just bowling out.
However, a lead is part of a team and as such is entitled to
his/her say. There is no reason why a lead shouldn’t actually know
more about the head than any other player in the team. Looking at
many so called skips over the years, the leads can do no worse in
reading a head. So let’s see an end to this phrase in Short Mat Bowls.
