IIBA BOOMER CUP
The final featured Armagh against a Donegal zone who had never won the competition
and who had featured in only one final. Armagh had come through against a disappoint-
ing North West side while Donegal defeated Mid Ulster in what was Mid Ulster’s poorest
display in many years. The only question was whether the Mid Ulster game would be
Donegal’s final and whether they could play to the same standard.
As it turned out it proved to be a disappointing final with Armagh’s performance
probably below the Mid Ulster one but this should not take away from a Donegal team
who were much more highly motivated and played to a much higher standard that Ar-
magh. The damage for Armagh was done on mat 1 where Armagh’s rink skipped by Cecil
Dillon were in trouble from the first end and were fortunate to be only 12 – 0 down after
9 ends and picking up a 3 on the last end was only damage limitation.
The other 2 games were closer with Donegal’s Jamie Glackin winning 8 – 4 while
Armagh’s Alan Paul squeezed home 7 – 6 on the last bowl to leave Donegal 26 – 14 up at
half time. Any hope of an Armagh recovery was quickly dashed as all 3 Donegal rinks
went into early leads adding another 11 shots to the half time score.
