John McLean Charity Tournament
40 teams from as far away as the
West Midlands, Devon, Glouces-
ter, Buckinghamshire, Somerset
and East Sussex played in the 6th
running of the John McLean Char-
ity Tournament, held for the fourth
year at Banister Park Indoor BC.
It is an event run in support
of Wessex Cancer Trust on or
about the anniversary of John’s
birthday and over the four years
previous to this year’s event,
around £5,000 has been raised by
the short mat bowlers.
Gloster Knights Each year has seen a

bumper raffle, along with other at-
tractions like “Name the Bear”, and target bowls. The teams came with names to challenge
the scorer who had scorecards to set up, but with a common aim to have a good, competitive,
and “fun” day in the name of raising money for the notable charity
After four games each in the round robin matches, the top two in each group progressed
to the knockout stages whilst the remainder contested the “Plate” competition. In the first
knockout round of the main
competition, last year’s winners
Flying Seamen, came up
against The Baggies who had
had a convincing progression
through Group 1, and unfortu-
nately found the West Midlands
team to be in continuing good
form, as they struggled to get
into any commanding position
at all, and ultimately lost 9-2.
