              John McLean Charity Tournament
              John McLean Charity Tournament

                                                                            40 teams from as far away as the
                                                                            West Midlands, Devon, Glouces-
                                                                            ter,  Buckinghamshire,  Somerset
                                                                            and East Sussex played in the 6th
                                                                            running of the John McLean Char-
                                                                            ity Tournament, held for the fourth
                                                                            year at Banister Park Indoor BC.
                                                                                 It is an event run in support
                                                                            of  Wessex  Cancer  Trust  on  or
                                                                            about  the  anniversary  of  John’s
                                                                            birthday and over the four years
                                                                            previous  to  this  year’s  event,
                                                                            around £5,000 has been raised by
                                                                            the short mat bowlers.
                Gloster Knights                                                  Each  year  has  seen  a
                Gloster Knights
                                                                            bumper raffle, along with other at-
             tractions like “Name the Bear”, and target bowls. The teams came with names to challenge
             the scorer who had scorecards to set up, but with a common aim to have a good, competitive,
             and “fun” day in the name of raising money for the notable charity
                   After four games each in the round robin matches, the top two in each group progressed
             to the knockout stages whilst the remainder contested the “Plate” competition.  In the first
             knockout  round  of  the  main
             competition, last year’s winners
             Flying  Seamen,  came  up
             against The Baggies who had
             had  a  convincing  progression
             through Group 1, and unfortu-
             nately found the West Midlands
             team to be in continuing good
             form, as they struggled to get
             into any commanding position
             at all, and ultimately lost 9-2.
                   On  the  next  mat,  Dorset
             Knobs outplayed Sussex Trio,
             and on the adjoining mat North                       Keep calm and run the jack
