White then opened up with two singles in the final but Jason Mclean struck back and by 15
the fifth end led 6 - 2. By the eighth this was 10 - 4 but David White was not giving up
easy and clawed back to 8 - 10 with just the last end to play, so for the third round in suc-
cession Jason Mclean was facing a player who needed two for a draw and three to win and
sure enough he repeated his single shot score and took the title by 11 shots to 8.

The second day’s play was as com-
petitive as the first. At the quarter
final stage Devon’s Michael Ivings
& James Smith snatched victory on
the last end by a single shot.
With two ends to go against
Oxford’s Andrew Brown & Tom
Pairs champions Shropshire’s Alan Williams & Alan Clough it seemed an uphill task with
Jones in grey with Noth Yorkshire’s Joseph New- the Oxfordshire pair bowling well but
some & Sean Conroy in White with two two’s on the last two ends
the Devon pair won their place in the
next round, with Oxfordshire wondering what happened! Shropshire’s Mike Tandy & Chris Willies
had an easier time against another Oxfordshire pair, Jack & David Knight.
At four all after five ends the West Mids pair took six shots over the next three ends to lead
10 - 4. The Oxfordshire pair needed at least two in order to play the last end but a single to them
gave the West Mids an unassailable 10 - 5 scoreline. Craig Burgess and Mitchell Young tried hard
for Essex and the match was close at 6 - 7 with just two ends to go but North Yorkshire’s Sean
Conroy & Joseph Newsome settled the matter with a full house four to give them victory by 11 - 6
with the last end unplayed. Completing the quarters, Alan Williams & Alan Jones romped home
12 - 3 over Terry Whitear & Jim Wood, who struggled recapture the form of earlier rounds.
In the semi-finals the North Yorkshire pair got into a hard low scoring match against Mike
Tandy & Chris Willies, who also struggled to keep their form up and victory went to Sean Conroy
& Joseph Newsome by 8 shots to 3. The other semi was a humdinger of a match that went right
to the wire.
Alan Williams & Alan Jones face Michael Ivings & James Smith. After seven ends the match
was all-square at 5 - 5. A three to Williams & Jones gave them the advantage with just two ends
to go. Ivings & Smith replied with a single leaving them just two behind on the last end but they
could only score a single and victory and a place in the final went to Shropshire’s Williams & Jones.
The final promised to be a titanic affair and thankfully this turned it out to be. At first Alan
Williams & Alan Jones gained the advantage and led 5 - 2 after five ends. They swapped shot for
shot and by the eighth end Williams & Jones held a slender 7 - 6 lead. A single on the next end
gave them a two shot advantage and despite a desperately close end Sean Conroy & Joseph
Newsome could only score a single leaving Williams & Jones as the Champions by just 8 - 7.
